DESCRIPTION

One of the original four buildings of the complex, the Coliseum (also called Coliseum Arena) is one of the oldest buildings on the property.

The Coliseum regularly hosts postseason college basketball championship events including women’s and men’s NCAA Tournaments as well as Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s and Men’s Tournaments. The Coliseum also serves as the home court for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team.

The Coliseum was the focal point of a recently completed $24 million renovation that included new cushioned seating in the lower and upper level, new center hung Daktronics scoreboard and renovations to the upper concourse including new concession stands and restrooms.

Phase I:  More than 9,000 new cushioned seats were installed to replace the almost 20 year old stadium seats.  The bright blue upholstered chairs will be an inch or two wider than the ones the coliseum uses now.  The old chairs will be reused by the parks and recreation department and at the amphitheater.  Fans can now enjoy events on a new high-definition LED scoreboard, as well as new display screens throughout the venue.

Along with new luxury suites and a new media entrance, there will also be a new ACC VIP lounge, and a Natty Greene's restaurant.  The new EPSN SportsCenter studio that will be added at one end of the arena will allow the cable sports show to have a better work space during the ACC tournaments.

Following the 2013 ACC Tournament, Phase II begins, which includes a concourse renovation and other amenities.

The massive new concourse will hold 144 new restrooms, newly added cooking stands on the upper and lower levels.  These are essential elements that patrons will appreciate while attending events.

The coliseum will continue to host events while construction is underway.  As, all the work will be done in and around concerts, basketball games, and other coliseum events.

Phase I was funded by the hotel and motel tax revenues in Greensboro, and cost about $10 million.

Phase II of the renovation will cost $14 million and should be complete by February 2014.
